So now, in the appropriately named forum "Brave New World," I pose this question:
Ought science be responsible for the (positive? progressive? upwards?) evolution of humanity as a species?
Or should it be responsible for the betterment of each individual life?
Or are these two not contradictory?
Consider a specific situation: An expecting mother learns that her fetus is destined to be severely disabled. Is science obligated to "fix" the "disability"? If it cannot, is it moral and ethical to terminate the pregnancy on the sole basis of the child's future disability? (e.g. do not consider impact on family's and government's financial well-being).
What if "disability" were expanded to mean * shorter than average; * dumber than average; * nearsighted; * etc.?
